One of the plots in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is the Murder of Dr. Robinson. One day in the book, Tom meets Huck with a dead cat and decides to talk to him. He finds out that dead cats can cure warts, and wants to try it for himself. He decides with Huck that Huck will meet Tom at his house, and Huck will "meow". When Huck gets to Tom's house, he "meow's" and Tom crawls out the window and meets Huck at the bottom. When they set off, they agree that it needs to be at midnight, and Huck explains how they wart cure works. When they get to the graveyard, they see three people near a grave from behind a tree. The people were Injun Joe, Muff Potter, and Dr. Robinson. While watching, Tom and Huck witness a planned sheme by Injun Joe to get back at Dr. Robinson because his father had put him in jail for threatining Dr. Robinson because he would not give Injun Joe food when he showed up on his door step. Injun Joe then said that he would get him back if it took 100 years, which is how Dr. Robinsons' father got him in jail. When Dr. Robinson tries to defend himself in the graveyard, Muff Potter steps in and he is knocked out by Dr. Robinson with the top of a coffin which they had dug up. When a knife falls out of Muff Potter's pocket, when Injun Joe picks it up and stabs Dr. Robinson dead. It turns out that Muff Potter had been drunk and didn't remember a thing. When everyone finds out, Injun Joe tells the town it was Muff Potter, everyone beleives him and they automatically assume it is Muff Potter without any evidence. When the time comes for the trial, Tom and Huck have gone to visit Muff Potter several times and have signed a contract, stating that they will not tell anyone what they saw in the graveyard. During the trial, Muff's lawyer would not cross-examine any of the witness', making it seem like Muff Potter was really guilty. After a couple of days, Tom confesses to Muff's lwayer, and calls Tom up to the stand. He confesses, but half way through Injun Joe jumps out the window and flees from authority. The rest of Injun Joe will be discussed in the Treasure Hunt Plot.
